Target and Walmart have lost their mojo. Same store sales and earnings have been flat or down for Target over the last year and Walmart recently posted six straight quarters of traffic declines and five in which same-store sales declined.
Fortunately both chains have recently installed new leaders – former PepsiCo exec Brian Cornell is Target’s new CEO, and Walmart’s new head of U.S. operations is 35-year retail veteran Greg Foran.
Last week I published a column on Forbes with my top recommendation for how these new chiefs should reverse these trends. They need to give people compelling reasons to choose to go to their stores.
