Over half the population of Japan accessed the Internet via their mobile phone in 2005. And for one quarter of Japanese internet users, their mobile phone was the only point of access. Proof if more were needed that the development and experience of using the Internet in Japan is fundamentally different to in Europe or the US.

Stats on the absolute numbers of Japanese internet users by access mode were reported by www.digitalworldtokyo.com/2006/07/more_internet_users_mob… as coming from the Ministry of Communications. I back-calculated to get the penetration %’s estimating the population of Japan to be 127m as of mid-year 2005 based on www.census.gov/cgi-bin/ipc/idbagg.
