Value Shifting

What do Ford and Delta Airlines have in common?

More specifically, what does the following ad for Ford’s new Edge and an announcement by a Delta SVP about improvements at the airlines’ LaGuardia terminal have in common?

How Relevant Are You? Really?

It’s official, marketing is irrelevant.  At least, it looks that way when you look at the topic of this year’s International Marketing Congress.  After all, if all was in good order, would a thousand marketers gather to discuss the ways they can increase the relevance of their profession?

Understanding Communities through Ethnography

Guest Post by: Dhiren (Market Sentinel)

Ethnography promises new insights for companies seeking to understand communities. A few weeks ago I caught up with ethnographer and technology researcher Tricia Wang to learn how.

Social Media, Apple

My latest column in Advertising Age reaffirmed a phenomenon I've seen for a while now: the topic most marketers want to talk about is social media. Praising or deriding Apple comes in a close second.

Design and Identity

Guest Post by: Laszlo Kövari

There are two types of design representing two poles of a spectrum: one of them is based on “what is”, the other is based on principles, so its function is to enable the emergence of “what should be”.

UK Internet Statistics

Guest Post by: Charlie Osmond

I am a sucker for uplifting videos about UK internet statistics. Particularly if accompanied by a happy jingle and sprinkled with start-up success stories. It’s warming for us little-islanders to occasionally  feel important “we’re on the map!” And here’s a video that delivers just that.

Patentwiki – An Idea Incubator

I’m working on a concept called Patentwiki.cc, a site where people, communities, and organizations can share and refine concepts prior to patenting and/or copywrite protection. The idea is to create shared ownership by early contributors, supporters and sponsors of innovative processes and ideas. It should also provide a simple structure for non-contributors to license the use of the idea for commercial use with fees going to pay the owners of the patent/licence.

This Side of Content Paradise: Experiential Content and the Future of the Web

It's almost a cliche these days to say that the Web is accelerating the move toward an attention-deficit disorder literary culture that celebrates the 140-character tweet but has a hard time digesting the 140-page book. We're constantly reminded that the Web is somehow making us stupid, but I'm starting to wonder if the next iteration of the Web - helped along by the explosion of new content experiences made possible by the iPad and the innovative programming capabilities of HTML5 - could actually lead to a backlash of sorts against short-form content culture and a renewed celebration of deep, experiential content.

Rewards as a Driver of Green Consumer Engagement

I joined RecycleBank for many reasons, one due to an observation regarding the application of rewards in the green space. Quite simply, rewards have the potential to change consumer behavior without necessarily changing attitudes first. I first wrote about this in a 2007 blog post. Today, it remains a powerful way to expand the appeal of green.
