Controversial game developer Rockstar Games is announcing that its upcoming "Grand Theft Auto 4" title will ship with a social component, suggesting a significant shift in the divide between dedicated home games and hosted online titles.
The game is the latest in the notorious Grand Theft Auto series that has garnered criticism for its blatant depiction of crime and violence, and Rockstar says the new title will include a Social Club that will allow players to track and compare scores across the Xbox Live and PlayStation 3 online networks. In addition, the game will dynamically aggregate information from connected players to display an LCPD Police Blotter that shows which areas of the in-game city are experiencing the greatest amount of player-generated crime and which weapons are most popular amongst users.
