In Other News

by on 4 May, 2007 - 15:47

Having been somewhat busy lately, I couldn't find the time for more than briefly scanning my feeds list. Like a good news monkey however, I do have to share those links that caught the eye.

Kick-off: jill/txt reminds people of a chess match that one could very well regard as an odd type of MMO.

Then: more and more organizations are getting into Second Life, such as the NBA and Reporters Without Borders.

In other Second Life news, a somewhat humourless report had a title that somewhat tickled me in a very funny way. Second Life Gaining Germans, Losing Women. *snicker*

Colony, a new MMO studio, is bent on creating a new and original game (ie: one that isn't a WoW clone). Good luck to you, sirs.

Also, Runescape hit 1M subscribers. Jolly good for them.

Ernest Adams writes for Gamasutra about how sometimes those out-of-genre features just don't belong in games and how all this collides with gamers who are handicapped or those who just aren't really good at action games.

Eliane Alhadeff blogs about serious games, and in no less than two blogs. In this particular article, she showcases connecting brains and games. Article highlights:

• Gaming industry working with brain wave-reading technology

• Technology makes video games more mentally stimulating

• Toys could boost mental focus and help kids with ADD

• Also enable paralyzed people to "move" in virtual realty

• Fulfilling the fantasy of telekinesis

The Escapist wraps a four parts piece on games and stories. I like the Escapist, most of their articles are well written and usually about things that interest me and this series made no exception. Link here.

This pretty much concludes this news round-up. Just one more link:

WoW Visa huh? How about that?
